His first job was with KBTV at Denver currently named KUSA from 1977 until 1981. Then he moved to PRISM- TV hosting the 76ers and Phillis show and also sportscasting. This was from 1981 to 1983.

Later, Gray was back at ESPN working on NBA broadcasts and sports center. It was in 1992 when Jim joined Showtime as a reporter for the Championship Boxing Series which he began in 1978. Jim was a live studio host for NFL Monday Night Show on the Westwood One Radio network. Plus Gray worked for the Super Bowl and NCAA final four. Since 1989, Jim was made the reporter on the live radio broadcast coverage for the CBS Radio Sports and West wood One.
At one time in Houston, Texas, Gray played the whole live game host for Super Bowl151 on Westwood One(5th February 2017). At Minneapolis was where Gray interviewed President Trump during the game’s halftime.
