Eli Soriano Biography
Eliseo “Eli” Fernando Soriano popularly known as Eli Soriano was a Filipino preacher and a televangelist. He was the Overall Servant, formerly called Presiding Minister, of the Members Church of God International (MCGI). Soriano was the main host of the radio and television program Ang Dating Daan, which is considered the longest-running religious program in the Philippines.
He was also known for straightforward preaching and ‘exposing’ the doctrinal errors of numerous local and foreign religious organizations that he claims are doctrinal errors. Through various priests, he also had several theological discussions. As a result, an incident where he used a defamatory term on his television show led to a three-month suspension of the program in a case that went to the Philippines Supreme Court.

Soriano would preach in various towns and municipalities in the Philippines before launching his flagship TV show. He began the Ang Dating Daan radio program in 1980, which became a television program in 1983. Soriano was invited to the multi-religious program of GMA-7, This is Manolo and His Brilliant Kin, as a panelist in 1983. Nicolas Antiporda Perez, then the presiding minister of the church, gave Soriano the title minister in 1969, making him the only minister in the Iglesia ng Dios kay Kristo Hesus, at that time Haligi at Suhay ng Katotohanan. There were reports circulating that Soriano was going to succeed Perez. However, Levita Gugulan was named a temporary presiding general secretary of the party after the death of Nicolas Perez in 1975. Soriano initially acknowledged Gugulan ‘s nomination, but subsequently denounced her leadership, arguing that, according to the Bible, women should not be church leaders.
In 1976, Gugulan’s sect abandoned Soriano and his allies. In 1977, a new party was recorded by Soriano, renamed Iglesia ng Dios kay Kristo Hesus, Haligi at Saligan ng Katotohanan (Church of God in Christ Jesus, Pillar, and Ground of Truth), later changed to Mga Kaanib sa Iglesia ng Dios kay Kristo Hesus, Haligi at Saligan ng Katotohanan sa Bansang Pilipinas, Inc. (Members of the Church of God in Christ Jesus, Pillar and Ground of Truth, Philippines, I Owing to the similarities between the name used by the Gugulan group and the Soriano group, the former filed a complaint that was decided in 2001 by the Philippines Supreme Court in favor of the Gugulan group and forced the Soriano group to change the name of their church. Soriano’s party changed the name of their church to Members Church of God International in 2004.

Via the support of his nephew, Daniel Razon, he led a variety of initiatives for the indigent. These include free medical and dental check-ups, a free bus ride, and a free transient home for homeless people. At La Verdad Christian College in Metro Manila, Soriano and Razon founded a free college scholarship program that provides eligible young people with scholarships.
On 17 May 2010, in a concert conceptualized by Daniel Razon, Soriano appeared (through a live video patch) and was entitled Protest Broadcast 3. The concert intends to support the families of the victims of the Massacre of Maguindanao. The victims’ representatives received the concert’s net proceeds. Scholarships will also be offered to the orphaned children of media employees. Soriano strongly criticized former Philippine president Arroyo during his appearance, whom he blamed for his legal troubles.
The free college program of Soriano-Razon will receive more financial support from the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) via a basketball game to be played by the PBA on August 1, 2010. The game is scheduled for the Cuneta Astrodome, titled “Hoopsters Meet The Legends: Kahit Isang Araw Lang.” The “PBA legends,” the Hoopsters (led by Razon), and the KAPI team are the teams involved. All the net proceeds will be provided to support Soriano and Razon’s free college program.

Soriano and Razon are also involved in the donation and launch of two mobile schools (called the Dunong Gulong Project equipped with learning tools suitable for Philippine Education’s ALS (Alternative Learning System). Initially, the project was conceptualized during a conversation between Education Secretary Br. Armin Luistro and Razon on the latter’s Good Morning Kuya television program.
On November 27, 2010, at the ADD Convention Center regarding the launch of Dunong Gulong, Education Secretary Luistro signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Daniel Razon. On November 28, 2010, the two Dunong Gulong mobile school buses were launched at the SM Mall of Asia. ‘And words became motion.’ This is how the project was identified by Luistro. He is impressed by the support given to the Philippines’ anti-illiteracy campaign by the public service channel UNTV and the benevolent group, Ang Dating Daan, headed by Soriano.

Soriano died on February 10, 2021, in Santa Catarina, Brazil at the age of 73. The Members Church of God International released a statement on the same day announcing his demise, but did not state his cause of death.

Different celebrities, religious groups and politicians including President Rodrigo Duterte sent their condolences and sympathies. They also sent messages of support and recognition of the late preacher’s services and charity works. On April 4 to April 10, 2021, the Members Church of God International held a special week-long charitable event called “The Legacy Continues”. The event coincided with the 57th year since the late preacher was baptized in the Church. The event included the MCGI Global Feeding Program, the opening of the MCGI Free Store branches ),a Wish Granting and a special episode of Serbisyong Bayanihan.
