Scott earned her first “A Place to Call Home” assignment in April 2011. The story involved a girl named Courtney. “I was given a photo of her and a small description, which basically is like, ‘She’s 10 years old. She loves animals, likes to be outside.’ And I’m thinking, ‘What are we going to do here?’”She felt unprepared and worried that she wouldn’t like her, or that she might be bitter, angry.

The segment was shot at the Little Rock Zoo’s then-new penguin show. “She was the sweetest, sweetest soul, and she spoke so frankly about having been in nursing care, and how painful it was to be in nursing care, and how much she wanted a family, and it broke my heart. It just broke my heart.” A couple who weren’t even trying to adopt the clip saw it, called the Children’s and Family Services Department, and began the process that brought the girl home.
